In 1983, museum director Frans Haks shook up the art establishment by inviting leading graffiti pioneers from New York to Groningen. The move caused controversy but also left a lasting mark on the city’s youth. Local graffiti artists like Pinox, Mickey, and Quask were profoundly influenced, transforming raw scrawls into vivid, elaborate murals. To them, graffiti was not vandalism, but salvation. Built from extensive archival collections in Groningen and Hilversum, as well as private footage, this documentary retraces the birth of graffiti as a cultural phenomenon that would forever change the city in the 1980s.
